From ITV News: "A massive 20.5 billion text messages were sent in the UK last year.
The number - the equivalent of 55 million a day - has rocketed since 1999 when the total for the year was a relatively modest one billion.
The Mobile Data Association, which published the figures, predicts no end to the popularity of texting despite the emergence of picture messaging.
It forecasts the number of texts sent on the UK's four main networks - Vodafone, Orange, I-Mobile and O2 - will reach 23 billion this year."
